The Uttar Pradesh Groundwater Department (UPGWD) was founded in 1975 to strategically oversee the usage, research, and management of groundwater in Uttar Pradesh, earning its current name in 1983.
UPGWD’s mission is to develop guidelines for research, management, and strategic planning of groundwater resources within the state, which includes conducting comprehensive studies and development programs. On September 20, 2020, UPGWD published guidelines for obtaining NOCs for groundwater extraction.
Optimized Utilization: Ensure the controlled and efficient use of groundwater resources.
Statewide Aquifer Mapping: Initiate a comprehensive program for aquifer mapping and management.
Recharge Initiatives: Implement large-scale groundwater recharge programs to stabilize over-exploited areas.
Integrated Water Use: Encourage the conjunctive use of both surface and groundwater.
Efficient Practices: Promote the use of efficient water usage methods in stressed regions.
River Basin Focus: Prioritize a river basin and watershed approach in planning and conserving groundwater management.
Pollution Control: Identify and address polluted groundwater areas to ensure the provision of safe drinking water.
Conservation Programs: Execute groundwater conservation and recharge initiatives in a coordinated manner with relevant departments.
Legal Framework: Establish effective legal structures for the sustainable management of groundwater resources.
These measures are designed to ensure the judicious and sustainable management of groundwater resources in Uttar Pradesh, safeguarding them for future generations.
